It's All Change Again!
Change can be a good thing but sometimes we might need some help accepting and allowing it.
Hi, how are you with change?
The reality is that change is always happening whether we like it or not.
Sometimes I like change and sometimes it unsettles me.
And other times my body and mind totally fight against it.
I feel like I’ve had a lot of change over the past few years and there have been times when I’ve struggled with it.
I really struggled when my son left home for University 3 years ago, but I got used to it and found a new way of enjoying my home life.
Then he came home and whilst that was lovely, it was an abrupt change in so many ways.
Now, he’s about to leave again and the rollercoaster of emotions is bubbling up for me as it has done so many times before.
Here’s the facts.
I want him to go off and live his life however he wants
I feel very unsettled about the change
I’ll miss him all over again
4 things that help with change
Remind yourself that change is safe. As human beings, we are programmed to fear change. Way back in time, it generally meant DANGER!
So, simply remind yourself that change is safe.
Breathe through the feeling - Seriously, deep breathing is so underrated and so effective. Focus on the change and any emotions it brings up. Take a deep breath in, hold for a count of 4 and slowly release.
Use EFT to let go of any unhelpful feelings or thoughts. Read my Quick and Easy EFT Guide and use tap and talk. Simply talk about how you’re feeling as you keep moving through the EFT tapping points. Release and improve the way you feel.
Put your attention on the positives - There are often pros and cons of any change. It’s fine to acknowledge the things you don’t like about the change but I encourage you to put your attention on the positives.
Let’s go back to my current situation of change as my son gets ready to move out again.
I acknowledge that I will miss him being at home (A LOT!)
But when I shift my attention to the positives, here’s what I get.
He’s only going to be an hour and 15 minutes away
He can come back here to stay for the odd night or 2 regularly
It’s easy for him to still attend family get-togethers
He’ll be happier as he’s moving in with his fiance - They lived together whilst at Uni and have both found it super hard being apart
I’ll enjoy having my house back the way I like it
I’ll enjoy not having to think so much about mealtimes
I’ll enjoy it being quiet at bedtime - My son stays up late and I go to bed early
You get the idea.
Change happens whether we want it or not, so we may as well make the most of it.
I hope you find these tips helpful when you face changes in your life.
