Do your goals feel overwhelming?
I read an article earlier this week (I don’t have the link for it, sorry) and it was saying that if you’re not achieving your goals they’re not ambitious enough.
I get that, for some people, but, I also think this is wrong advice for a huge number of people. You know, people like me and you with normal lives.
I absolutely love big, ambitious goals but in reality, unless they’re handled right, they can become so overwhelming that nothing ever gets done. The goal remained a pipeline dream that never gets achieved.
EXAMPLE
Let me give you an example. It is a very low-level goal but I think you’ll get what I mean.
I had a goal to walk for 20+ minutes a day. The goal was to improve my health rather than having a burning desire to walk.
If I started my goal with walking 20+ minutes every day, I would have failed, probably on day 2.
So, I set a goal for a month to walk to the end of my drive. It’s not a long drive. You can park 2 cars on it.
If I really didn’t want to walk, I could turn around and go back inside. Goal Achieved for the day.
But, if I’d got my shoes on and got out of the door, that was the biggest hurdle. I’d get to the end of the drive and I always kept going. Sometimes it was a 3-minute walk, sometimes 5 or 10 and that was okay. A lot of the time, I’d walk for 20+ minutes
The end of my drive was doable with everything else I had going on in my life at the time.
Walking 20+ minutes a day felt way too overwhelming.
This same idea applies to all goals however big they are.
